Brackley gardeners carried out the planting to this small garden in Adderbury, Oxfordshire in 2016. Garden was designed by Alexander John Garden Design & Maintenance of Banbury, Oxfordshire. This south facing garden is located on a new development on the Aynho Road in Adderbury. The garden enjoys a warm and pleasant aspect much of the day and is enclosed by an ironstone wall.
The main border follows the contour of the rear boundary wall and is planted with a minimal but repetitive planting scheme to provide continuity throughout the year. In the right corner we planted a Betula Jacquemontii Silver birch to act as a corner focal point. In time this will fill out and screen over looking windows. Further height in the bed was created using Acer Senkaki (The Coral bark Japanese maples). A superb maple to use to provide winter interest with their coral bark trunks.
The under-planting features: Allium Purple Sensation, Helleborus Niger, Stipas, Astrantias, Echinacea, Agapanthus, Heleniums, Liriopes, Tulipas, Achilleas and Eremerus. These will provide a continued abundance of flowers from early spring into the winter months. We have used garden lighting to up-light the Japanese maples and Birch in the evening hours and to provide a warm glow from the ironstone wall with the use of LED lights.
On the garage wall we created 3 wooden trellis panels and planted evergreen Star jasmines to fill and cover the wall. Beneath Banbury Paving and Fencing created a section of paving for the provision of a garden bench as a place to sit and view the garden from a different angle and to enjoy the heady perfume from the jasmines overhead. Further paving was installed in the garden to create a larger patio seating area adjacent to the kitchen french doors and adapted the side fence so that 3 wheelie bins could be positioned and out of view from the garden. A small herb bed was created with a collection of herbs for culinary use in the kitchen. Consisting primarily of contained Mint, Rosemary, Oregano, Sage, Chives, Thyme, French Tarragon and Bay.
The two front garden planting was restricted to a set combination of plants. The use of mini lollipop golden foliage Euonymus, Lavender Hidcote for edging both borders and internal plantings of Allium Purple Sensation, Anthemis EC Buxton, Salvia Blue Queen, Verbena Bonariensis, Californian lilac and Blue and White Wisterias to train around the front, side and rear walls of the property over time.
